<input>Project Description: ${inputVariable1}</input>

Follow this process to complete the pre-mortem:

Step 1: Imagine it is 6-12 months in the future and the project has failed. List out the top 5-10 potential reasons why, considering factors like:

  • Flawed assumptions
  • Unforeseen obstacles
  • Planning or execution missteps
  • Resource or skill gaps
  • Communication breakdowns
  • External events

Step 2 For each identified risk, assess the likelihood (Low/Medium/High) and potential impact (Low/Medium/High).

Step 3: Brainstorm 1-3 specific actions that could help mitigate each risk. Consider ways to:

  • Pressure test key assumptions
  • Build in contingencies
  • Secure critical resources
  • Communicate proactively
  • Adjust plans as needed

Step 3: Summarize the top risks and proposed mitigations in a concise report for project stakeholders.

Constraints:

  • Focus on the most critical 5-10 risks, not an exhaustive list
  • Prioritize risks based on likelihood and impact
  • Suggest realistic, practical mitigations

Style guide:

  • Use clear, direct language
  • Assess risks objectively
  • Keep suggestions constructive
  • Target an 8-10th grade reading level
